Instructional Practice

Standard #6: Assessment
The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher's and learner's decision making.

Document:
  • Assessment Commentary - EDU 3041
  • Assessment Commentary - EDU 4060
  • Assessment Portfolio & Rubric - EDU 3041***
Reflection:
With several ways of assessing student growth, I provide evidence in my Assessment Commentaries from both EDU 3041 and EDU 4060 that I monitor students learning progress. Within these documents, I discussed giving specific feedback to help guide my students to a better understanding, Another way that I provided method of assessment was by referring students back to the essential literacy strategies, this guided me and the learners to decision making.

Standard #7: Planning for Instruction
The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context.

Document:
  • Planning Commentary - EDU 4060
  • Instruction Commentary - EDU 4060

Reflection:
Following the style of edTPA rubric, creating the Planning Commentary and Instruction Commentary really helped me evaluate how I can plan for instruction by creating a goal to reach. With a central focus in the Planning Commentary in the ELA lesson for figurative language, I discuss the benefits of using cross-disciplinary skills to achieve rigorous learning goals. With knowledge of learners, I determined pedagogy in a day-by-day lessons following the essential literacy strategy. In the Instruction Commentary, I discuss how my instruction created engaged students to make real-life connections. This connects to the INTASC standard by using cross-disciplinary skills to reach learning goals for different learners.

Standard #8: Instructional Strategies
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

Document:

  • Standard Form, Word Form, and Expanded Form Lesson - MAT 4020

Reflection:
Understanding the use of manipulatives and hands-on strategies to encourage learners, I made sure to have an engaging activity in each of my lessons. In this MAT 4020 lesson on standard form, word form, and expanded form, I provided kinesthetic, visual, and audial strategies to develop deep understanding of content areas as well as making connections among the three. Even in my other lessons I have created, I took into consideration the importance of providing a variety of instructional strategies to build skills and to apply knowledge in the students lives to make it meaningful for them.
